I like photographs...

I like photographs, it's the main reason why I involve myself with photography and cameras and everything else that goes with it. My favourite type of photograph is the Snapshot, it's even better than the portrait. Until I find something more descriptive this will be the best snapshot quote:

"...you cant help but be helplessly reminded of the sort of bleached Kodak snapshots taken decades ago and found in shoe boxes in attics everywhere. You know the type, all yellowed and filmy, always a big faded car in the background and fashions that look surprisingly hip. When you see such photos, you cant help but wonder at just how sweet and sad and innocent all moments of life are rendered by the tripping of a camera’s shutter, for at that point the future is still unknown and has yet to hurt us, and also for that brief moment, our poses are accepted as honest." - from Generation X by Douglas Coupland

minolta 'A' 1955 - 1957

I picked up this old Minolta 'A' rangefinder at my local antique shop for the very fair sum of R110.00(us$14.50), it's in almost perfect condition except for the previous owner who left his name and a number scratched into the aluminum body. The rangefinder look fine but it's slightly out of horizontal alignment, it hopefully won't affect the focussing though. I removed a reasonably new roll of Kodak film from the film bay, and then replaced it with a new roll of Fuji 200 color. Click on an image to view bigger.

Black and White Memories

Last night I burned five old photography books that became virtually unusable when my trailer flooded last winter, most of the pages were stuck together, and on the farm it's just so much easier to dispose of the ashes than the actual books. Sadly one of them was the David Bailey book  that my housemate Jason stole from the campus library about eight years ago. By the time I stole it from him the pages were already separated from the cover and the book itself  in many pieces. You can help me feel better by buying me another copy here.
